I’m told that if you’re from Ann Arbor, the name “Knight’s” is practically synonymous with local dining tradition. First opened in 1984, Knight’s on Dexter has been serving the community with its hearty meals and strong drinks for decades. Studio Four8 recently visited Knight’s for a team lunch, and as your friendly local Studio Four8 Admin, I’m excited to share my experience with you.
To me, walking into Knight’s is like stepping into the social club from a mafia movie. When the team went, the restaurant was bustling with regulars. The interior is dimly lit and wood paneling lines the walls. Recently added skylights add natural light in some sections of the restaurant. A Full suit of armor stands guard in the corner leading to the stairs. Despite the busy-ness, the noise level is manageable and the atmosphere is pleasant. You’ll be able to easily have a conversation once inside, whether you’re catching up with friends or discussing the latest real estate trends.
Sara opted for a grilled tuna sandwich on Rye. The tuna was perfectly mixed with just the right amount of mayonnaise and seasoning, creating a creamy texture that paired beautifully with the crisp, toasted rye bread. The melted cheese added a rich, savory note, making this sandwich a comforting and satisfying choice.
I was told by Jeffrey that Knight’s is known for their legendary chicken salad, Knight’s did not disappoint. The Chicken Salad Plate featured a generous scoop of their famous chicken salad, served alongside fresh greens and a variety of crisp vegetables. The chicken salad itself was flavorful, with tender chunks of chicken mixed with a creamy dressing that had a hint of sweetness and tang.
Todd’s Order, the Half Chicken Salad Sandwich paired with a cup of chili, looked and smelled like a fantastic option. The sandwich offered the same delightful chicken salad mentioned above, nestled between slices of soft bread. He also had a cherry coke.
The Cobb Salad at Knight’s is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Piled high with fresh greens, it was topped with a generous amount of grilled chicken, crispy bacon, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, tomatoes (Though I watched Kayla pick off all of the tomatoes), and blue cheese crumbles.
Dan chose the Turkey Reuben, which looked like a delightful twist on the classic Reuben sandwich. The turkey appeared tender and juicy, paired with tangy sauerkraut and creamy Thousand Island dressing, all sandwiched between slices of perfectly toasted rye bread.
No visit to Knight’s is complete without mentioning their famously strong drinks. Known for their heavy pours, Knight’s bartenders certainly don’t skimp on the liquor. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cocktail or something more adventurous, you’re sure to get your money’s worth. Jeffrey said he once saw a busser wearing a tee shirt with the knights logo that said “#strongdrinks”, so Knight’s leans into this reputation.
Knight’s is more than just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Ann Arbor history. With its inviting atmosphere, delectable food, and strong drinks, it’s no wonder this local institution has stood the test of time.
