The Four8 Foodies | Culantro Peruvian Eatery

Culantro, a new Peruvian restaurant in the space formerly occupied by The Broken Egg, opened on December 1, 2023. Recently, Studio Four8 stopped in for lunch, before we headed out to our afternoon appointments.

The original Culantro is located in Ferndale, and both locations feature original Peruvian fare. Dishes like pollo a la bras, lomo salted, and ceviche are permanent fixtures on the menu.

Our meal started of a plate of the Patacones Picantes. Fried plantains topped with a spicy aji verde and pico de gallo.

Delicious, with a spicy zip to the sweeter plantain flavor

An order of the Carnipapas was well received. Marinated beef strips over wide French fries, topped with Chimichurri and garlic aioli.

The Aji de Gallina is shredded chicken in a yellow cream sauce, consisting of walnuts and Amarillo peppers. Taco Lomo features rice cooked with Canario Beans, garlic and aji amarillo, then served with strips of steak, tomatoes, yellow peppers and green onions.

A stand out on the menu was the Chicha Morada. It’s a sweet-tart Peruvian drink that derives its color from dried purple corn. This juice is garnished with chunks of pineapple and apple and spiced with cinnamon and cloves. A delightful sipping drink that went very well with the Carnipapas.

All in all, if you are looking to try authentic Peruvian fare, be sure to tuck into Culantro. Service with a smile, delightfully laid back atmosphere, and be sure to order the Chicha Morada.

Located at the corner of Main and Miller Streets, Culanatro is well located for foot traffic, downtown lunches, and a comfort food meal for dinner.
